Ah! My Goddess
Dec 07th, 2005, 7:12pm

In the past month have viewed Ah my Goddess Volume 1 and the just released (in US) volume 2.   If you were a fan of Chobits, you will like this series.   Belldandy (the goddess) and Chi-chan share many properties. Naive about the world, odd for a goddess, but posessed of a spirit and personality very endearing.  Both series are very clean and wholesome.   In a sense AMG picks up where Chobits ends, the male lead has just gotten into college and is in the middle of his first year when Belldandy appears (literally out of thin air!)  Where volume 2 picks up is about 4 months later when (SPOILER) his younger sister shows up and Belldandy's older sister Urd also comes to visit.   For a Goddess, Urd is surprisingly devilish, she adds spice to the basic love story.   Mr. Motsura, the blessed guy, is a typicial nerd with no luck with the women.  It's a bit of a strech that after living for months with the extreamly cute Belldandy, he still can't bring himself to kiss her.  Urd tries to help him with his hang ups.   Ah My Goddess is based on Norse mythology, (vikings), so though they have angel wings, they are not the chaste angles of King James.  It is surprising the Japanese did such a good job with such foreign ideas.   The antimation is of the same quality as Chobits, that is excelent artwork but needing more frames per sec to smooth out the action.   The theme songs sounds like they DID come from a angle!  I could listen to those songs all day.  I am greatly looking forward to Vol 3 January 31 2006.  The Japanese TV series has been renewed for 2006, it's second year.  Perhaps this means there will be a vol 4 and 5.  One thing I am confused about, I've read that 'OH' my Goddess appeard as a TV series in the mid 1990s; so is 'AH' my Goddess a re-mix or a re-make?

I have finished volume 1, and it is fantastic!!! I can't wait to pickup volume 2. I have to disagree with you on it being simliar to Chobits, or where Chobits ends.

The first Ah My Goddess OVA series was 5 episodes on two DVD's. It was the same storyline as the manga. Then there was Ah My Goddess The Movie released in 2000. Stunning quality on the character design and animation!

The current series is a redo of the original OVA but at a much slower pace, matching the manga, with more time for character development and plots.

One interesting thing is looking that the original OVA animation quality vs. the movie and the current series. Quite the improvement!!

Thanks for the input.  I'm rather new to Anime.  For instance, what does OVA stand for?   How is Belldandy different than Chii-chan you think?   In particular the Male caracter is exactly the same as in Chobits, though perhaps less of a failure.   Both plots are about developing relationships at their core.  I guess I hope for Pixar and Dreamworks quality antimation all the time.  I agree the quality of AMG is better than old cartoons like bugs bunny.  Speaking of antimation quality, xbox360 will blow you away.

OVA is original video animation, many times in japan anime is released directly to DVD before going to cable/satellite. That trend may start here, but the system is so different. To me why they are different is what they are, goddesses, with their father being God. And Urd the goddess of the past, and Skuld being the goddess of the future. There is much detail with the goddess system and people's paths and fate. Keiichi is hardly a failure, just a struggling student, something we can all relate to!

Have now seen volume 4.   Producers have been generous again in that there are 5 eipsodes on the DVD.   Plots in the first two episodes on this disk seem to have been dumbed down.   Both Mara (the devil agent) and Belldandy were very incompetent, childish and naive.   The rest of the production quality was good.   It's as if the script writers were ordered to write for 5 to 9 years olds rather than the usual 10 to 16 age bracket.   Does the manga reflect this??   In terms of plot the rest of the DVD was only fair.   I hope volume 5, due out June 6th has better written stories.

Yes, I have just finished vol 4 now. I dont think its a good as vol 3. Belldandy is naive for sure, but I think more childlike, I'm not sure about being incompetent. The animation and character design are awesome, very good quality. I know what you mean about the script, very sugary, the manga is this way from the ones I have read. I think it has more to do with the pacing. Its moving alot slower then the orginal OVA. The dialog has some hints where things may be going. Right now I think my favorite characters are Urd & Megumi ^_^

The reason I say incompetent is that Mara and Belldandy have tangled before.   They should just KNOW better.   Belldandy should not be decieved so easily;  listening on the phone for 5 minutes of dead air ?!
And Mara, could not get around that stupid robot?   Again the plot was too simplistic.   It is not the pacing,  I am enjoying the caracter development.   I have become tired of the constant action, action, non-stop action of most Animes.   With that in mind, you should see VOICES OF A DISTANT STAR by Makoto Shinkai.  It is a 20 minute short he produced BY HIMSELF.   I assure you it is top quality in all respects.   Shows what you can do in 7 months with a fast workstation and the right combination of graphics / anime software, plus real dedication and talent.

That's just how the Goddess series is with the paceing and Belldandy's being extremely naïve about everything! That is the most common criticism of the series, and the slow pacing, but I think the speed issue is just how people are conditioned from various media.

I saw Voices Of A Distant Star a few years ago, most excellent!! You should check out his latest work, The Place Promised In Our Early Days.
